The Surrogate Sea by Danielle E. Shipley #Fantasy #Giveaway

They say I am broken, for I cannot speak.
The East Wind scorns, the North Wind sneers,
While West Wind’s mouth turns down in pity.
A pity that Wind of the South and Sea
Can have no daughter more than me.
No power of my own, but only
Silent shadows of their strengths.

They say my name –
Say “little Great one” –
Meaning one and not the other.
They think me small.
They think me nothing.
They wonder that my father storms
And mother swells
To hear such talk,
For is the talk not true?

They call me weak.
They call me dumb.

They say
They say
They say

I say

Without a word
Without a sound
Or with a song that flows and blows
With music sprung up from my spirit
Melodies of meaning

With a gesture
With a dance
A glance, a tilt, a twist, a touch
What I say in what you see
Meaning in the movement

Look and listen.
Stop and watch me.
See the speech inside my silence –
Truths I speak where words would stumble.
Use your eyes,
Your ears,
Your core.

Silence. Listen.
There it is.

I say
I say
I say

I am

Not wind, not Sea,
But both, and neither.
Born of each,
By both beloved.
Judged worthy in their hearts,
And mine.

And you
Will
Hear me
.
.
.
Music echoing on long after song is done.

Do you believe in ghosts? Pipe Dreams by Ashantay Peters #fantasy @TWRP

I'm thrilled to have the lovely Ashantay Peters here today to share what inspired her newest release, Pipe Dreams!

~~~oOo~~~
Thanks for inviting me to your blog today, Terri. I appreciate the opportunity to visit with another Wild Rose author and to meet some new folks!
You asked me to write about my inspiration for Pipe Dreams, my book releasing tomorrow through The Wild Rose Press. I’ll state a disclaimer first – if you don’t believe in ghosts, you likely won’t believe my next words, either. You see, Pipe Dreams was inspired in part by a ghost who visited me many years ago.
My then husband and I moved to Florida and purchased an older home. The house had been built and owned by one set of owners, one of whom died there, though we didn’t know that last until later.
The landscaping had been allowed to grow long, and the interior held decades of tobacco smoke coating every surface, but the bones of the house were excellent. Not being strangers to hard work, the low purchase price made this an attractive deal.
After we completed the work and moved in, I began noticing what smelled like fresh tobacco smoke at odd times. We didn’t smoke and had cleaned, primed, and sealed every surface, so I had no clue where the odor originated.
One quiet morning, I finally understood that the house held a ghost. Our neighbors had told us the older man had died at home, and that he smoked heavily. I figured he was the ghost and addressed him by name. We came to a consensus, he left, and the tobacco odors stopped, though every now and again, I sensed a wisp of smoke.
So there you have it—my inspiration for Pipe Dreams.   I hope you enjoyed my little story, and that you will also consider reading the fictional account. The book’s coffee house owner is much sexier than my former husband ever was!
No I’d love to hear from you, readers—have you had a ghost experience? Did it work out well?
Excerpt
         “So are you the new owner of this wreck?”
         Her hands clenched, along with her jaw. “I’m the proud owner of what will soon be a lovely home.”
         He snorted. “You planning to have this in shape any time before winter? Because from where I’m standing, you’ll need more than a mop.”
         Abigail’s ears heard echoes of Rich. “I have power tools, and I know how to use them. You have an issue with that?”
         “No, I don’t have an issue. You’ve got work ahead of you. Just sayin’. I guess you’ll be hiring a crew for the big stuff, right?”
         Abigail threw her shoulders back. This guy sounded exactly like Rich. Bossy. “I can handle it.” She’d already sub-contracted the larger jobs, but that wasn’t his business.
         His mouth drew into a tight line, his hands fisted on his hips. “Sorry to bother you. I stopped because it looked like you might need a hand. Guess I misunderstood.”
         Dropping his hands, Carlos turned to leave, looking back with a frown. “Good luck with this place. Come on, Henry, we’re not needed here.”
         Henry paused, allowing her to ruffle his fur. He broke into a run, following the pissed-off man. An imp on her shoulder prodded her to call after him, “Bye, Henry. You can come visit anytime.” Sotto voce she added, “But leave your human home.”
         The dog’s owner kept walking with his shoulders up around his chin.
“Men,” she huffed under her breath. “Just a bunch of know-it-all jackasses. And the good-looking ones are the worst.”
Born in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade. Summers were about riding, fishing and make-believe, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all.
I struggled with multiple learning disabilities, did not excel in school. I spent much of my time looking out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) I fought dyslexia for my right to read, like a prince fights a dragon in order to free the princess locked in a tower, and I won.
Afterwards, I read like a fiend. I invented stories where I could be the princess… or a gifted heroine from another world who kicked bad guy butt to win the heart of a charismatic hero. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Later, I moved to Florida where I continued to fantasize about superpowers and monsters, fabricating stories (my mother called it lying) and sharing them with my friends.
Then I thought I’d write one down…
Hooked, I’ve been writing ever since. I write historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, adventure, and young adult romances. I love strong heroines, sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. My writing is proof you can work hard to overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up. I say, if you write, write on!
They say death can be beautiful. But after the death of her mother, seventeen-year-old RAVEN WEATHERSBY gives up her dream of becoming a fashion designer, barely surviving life in the South Carolina lowlands.
To make ends meet, Raven works after school as a seamstress creating stunning works of fashion that often rival the great names of the day.
Instead of making things easier on the high school senior, her stepdad’s drinking leads to a run in with the highly reclusive heir to the Maddox family fortune, Gideon Maddox.
But Raven’s stepdad’s drying out and in no condition to attend the meeting with Maddox. So Raven volunteers to take his place and offers to repay the debt in order to keep the only father she’s ever known out of jail, or worse.
Gideon Maddox agrees, outlining an outrageous demand: Raven must live in his home for a year while she designs for Maddox Industries’ clothing line, signing over her creative rights.
Her handsome young captor is arrogant and infuriating to the nth degree, and Raven can’t imagine working for him, let alone sharing the same space for more than five minutes.
But nothing is ever as it seems. Is Gideon Maddox the monster the world believes him to be? And can he stand to let the young seamstress see him as he really is?
The Artisans is a delectably rich, layered and dark YA Southern Gothic inspired by Jeanne Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s classic Beauty and the Beast.
The Artisans has all the elements I love – spooky intrigue, strong friendships, and a romantic tension to be savored.” ~ Wendy Higgins, New York Times bestselling author of the Sweet Evil trilogy.
Her Soldier's Touch by J.M. Stewart #Contemporary #Romance
Her Soldier's Touch
Author: J.M. Stewart
Genre: contemporary romance
Publisher: Crimson Romance
Release date: March 16, 2015
ISBN: 978-1-4405-8137-3
ISBN-10: 1-4405-8137-1
Experience has taught single mother Rachel Madison that the only person she can truly rely on is herself. But what she wants most in the world—to give her son the life she never had growing up—means she must put her faith in a man who once walked out on her.
Retired from the service, U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Colton Taylor makes a detour to Phoenix to bury his brother. Nobody is more surprised than he is to see Rachel waiting for him at the airport. He regrets the morning he walked away from her, but coming from an abusive home taught Colt to put limits on all his relationships—especially this one.
So when he discovers he has a son, Colt knows this is a chance to prove to himself he’s not a chip off the old block. Turning his life around doesn’t come naturally, though. Then a drug dealer crops up from his brother’s dark past, threatening their son and forcing Colt and Rachel to face their demons … and each other.
Sensuality Level: Sensual
EXCERPT:
“How the hell could you not tell me I had a son?”
Rachel darted a panicked glance at the hallway behind her then narrowed her eyes.
“Keep your voice down. He doesn’t know. When and if I decide to tell him, it’ll be on my terms.” She drew up straight and angled her chin a bit higher, but he didn’t miss the hurt that flared in her eyes. “You left, Colt. Left without a word and never came back. Or did you forget that part?”
He folded his arms, firmly ignoring the regret that sank, hard and cold and heavy, in his stomach. If he acknowledged it, he’d have to face the very real possibility he’d become what he loathed, and he would not go there. Not now. “You still should have told me. Jake knows how to reach me. Rosa knows how to reach me. Hell, any army base in the United States could figure out where I was in case of emergency. I had a right to know I have a son.”
Rachel froze where she stood, her eyes wide and searching his. Several heartbeats later, she let out a heavy sigh, her shoulders rounding, and dropped her arms to her sides. “You’re right. It’s why I met you at the airport. I was wrong to keep him from you.”
The dejection in her tone cut him to the quick. Regret erupted in Rachel’s eyes, hitting his chest in a sucker punch. His anger slipped from his fingers as years of denial, of longing, rushed up on him. Damn his weak hide. One soft sigh from her and all his good intentions went up in a puff of smoke. If he was honest with himself, they always had.
Excerpt:
Time to focus on the Cosmo article she read two days before about flirting. She sipped her citrus martini, and as she brought the glass down, she licked her lips and glanced at her target. He actually flinched, the hunger in his eyes darkening. Barely enough for anyone to notice, but she did. She ran her hand up and down her neck, closing her eyes for a minute. When she opened them to look his way again, he had already started to walk in her direction. No, he didn’t walk; he actually strutted like a man on a mission.
She was his mission. Shit. Shit. Shit. Play it cool, Veronica. You’re a strong, sensual woman. You can do this.
She sipped her yellow drink again to calm herself, and if she was lucky, he wouldn’t notice her shaking. Calm. Sensual. Like a boss.
He positioned himself in front of her, one hand in his pocket and the other holding a tumbler of brown liquid, and rocked on the heels of his dark Dolce & Gabbana brogues.
“Hello.” His voice reverberated down to her core.
She gulped her martini to gain more liquid courage, but rather than bravery, the unthinkable happened. She swallowed the cherry that swam in her drink and the tickle in her throat drove her into a coughing frenzy.
She tried to smile through it, to let him know all was fine and she could still be the sexy seductress. As his large, firm hand patted her back, she fanned the air and grabbed his tumbler, downing the thick liquid.
After a last cough, she cleared her throat one more time. “Whoa. What was that?”
“Whiskey. Neat.” He grinned, his gorgeous caramel eyes lit with an inner glow. “You okay?”
A warmth spread over her cheeks. Holy freaking embarrassment. “It was strong.”
“I could’ve warned you, I guess, but you were busy.” He grinned and squeezed her shoulder with his large hand.
Was that an accent? Damn, could he be more perfect? Immediately, she glanced at his hand that revealed several tattoos peeking out of his jacket hem, from his wrist all the way down to his fingers. No ring. Thank God.
“Can we forget that happened? I’m not usually like that.” She waved her hand in the air and winced inwardly.
God, she wanted to erase that doomed first impression. She was confident, dammit. She didn’t want this dreamy man to know she could be less than sophisticated. Her act was more difficult than she imagined.
“It’s a shame. I kind of liked the unusual first encounter. Not that I want you to choke, but I was ready to save you.” He braced his tattooed hand against the wall behind her, moving closer. His manly smell was soapy, with a hint of wood.
Save her he might. “Who are you?”
He squinted his glowing eyes and turned his head to the side. He didn’t say anything for a long time, just studied her and then rolled on the heels of his feet. “Who are you?”
His “r” rolled off his tongue with a Spanish accent of some kind.
“When someone answers a question with a question, it’s one of two things. Either the person doesn’t have anything interesting to say or he’s hiding something. Are you hiding something?”
He lowered his voice and ran a hand up her arm. “I think we all do. Why are you hiding in the corner?”
Damned if the man’s touch sent shivers all the way to her toes. “So someone like you would find me.”
“Like me? How am I?”
“A man with questions … and a devious grin.”
As suspected, his smile grew and his gaze sought hers. “Well, I came over to tell you how stunning you look, but being a woman of such deep insight, you might take that the wrong way, no?”
“I’ll take it any way you want.” Yep. The alcohol had definitely gotten to her.
